A
Adobe Acrobat Reader Free software that lets you view and print PDF(Portable Design Format) files on all major computer platforms.
AICC (Aviation Industry CBT Committee) AICC is a standard used by learning management systems. There are 9 different AICC guidelines and recommendations. A LMS has to comply with at least one or more AICC standard to be compliant.
Alpha Version An alpha version of a program is also known as a "pilot" version, which can be tested for overall usability and training effectiveness.
Animation The art of generating moving pictures or images to create an illusion of a motion picture using technology is known as animation. Animations illustrate a process of moving objects/images rather than a static visual.
Audience The end user population of a training product. Careful consideration of factors such as learning styles, education, preferences, background, and job responsibilities of the audience helps create more successful eLearning courses.
Audio One of the medium of delivering information to the end user, to be processed by a learner's ears.
Authoring Tools Authoring Tools are software applications used to create eLearning modules and content. These tools give the trainers and instructional designers the ability to create interactive eLearning content. Most authoring tools are SCORM & AICC compliant.

Blended Learning Blended Learning is when an instructor uses multiple methods to deliver learning content. The most common would be an instructor using eLearning applications combined with face to face meetings to deliver the learning content.
Bloom's Taxonomy Benjamin S. Bloom's six levels of competency: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation. Bloom's Taxanomy is one of the many theories used by instructional designers to create training design, development, and evaluation.
Branching A tutorial structure that progresses through material in a path that depends on the learner's response to questions.
Browser Also called a Web Browser, it is used to access the text, graphic, audio, video and animation elements of the Internet and Intranets. Firefox, IE, Chrome, Netscape are the most commonly used browsers.
C
CD-ROM Compact Disc Read Only Memory. An optical disc to record and read information. CD-ROM is used to store large quantities of information.
Certification Recognition and acceptance as a qualified professional in a specific area. Certification comes after the learner has successfully completed training and has passed an assessment with a minimum acceptable score.
Chunk of Content Instruction required to teach an objective.
Chunking The process of separating learning materials into brief sections to improve learner comprehension and retention.
CMI Computer Managed Instruction is a feature built into computer that will feed data on learner progress/results to an LMS.
Compliance Adherence & performance of a software product according to the standards, conventions or laws.
Computer-Based Training(CBT) Computer-Based Training, typically delivered on CD-ROM or from a mainframe.
Content Management System(CMS) Content Management system helps create, edit, review, index, search, publish and archive various kinds of media and electronic text.
Content Information and experiences created for an audience.
Cookie A small file or a line of text that a website puts on the user's computer while visiting a web page.
Course Map A flow-chart that details all the elements of the course. Course Maps depicts the flow of the training course that a student should undertake.
Course Activities and information, combined in electronic or print format, designed to help learners develop proficiency in a skill or gain knowledge about a given topic.
Courseware A set of lessons or instructional materials used to support the learning process in an electronic form.
Curriculum Predefined series of courses designed to meet a specific goal like degree, diploma or certification in a particular field of study or job skills & knowledge.
Custom Content Content that has been customized and developed to meet specific learning objectives.

Delivery Process/Method of providing education to the end user. Method/Process include instructor-led training, Web-based distance learning, online laboratories, CD-ROMs, interactive TV, videos, and books.
Design Comprising of the activities needed to create course framework or structure.
Developer Member of the training project team involved in development activities or the project team as a whole.

eLearning Learning that makes use of technology such as computers or the Internet for delivery, interaction or facilitation. eLearning involves some kind of interactivity, such as online interaction or face to face interaction between the learner and the teacher/peer/facilitator.
E-mail Short for electronic mail, communication (text message, audio/video clips, images) sent across Internet medium from the email address of one user to the email address of another user.
Evaluation Method used to gather information about the impact or effectiveness of a learning event. Evaluation of a learning event determines if the learning objectives were achieved and/or if the offering has been of value to the organization.

Facilitator An online course instructor aiding in online/distance learning program.
FAQ Frequently Asked Questions. A list of commonly asked questions and answers to facilitate easy of learning for the learner.
Feedback Information provided to learners about the correctness of their response (different from remediation).
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Generally called FTP. Method of transferring files over intranets or the Internet.
Firewall An application that isolates part of a network, like a company's private intranet, from access to or by other parts of the network, like the public Internet.
Flash Flash is animation software designed to create animations for display on websites. The Flash files, commonly called "Flash movies" have a .swf file extension and may be an object of a web page, or a self-executing Flash movie. Flash video files have a .FLV file extension and are utilized from within .swf files.

Graphical User Interface An interface based on graphics like icons, pictures, menus, etc as opposed to textual elements such as words and character strings. The Microsoft Windows operating system is the classic example of a program with a GUI. Pronounced "gooey".
H
Hosting The storage of web page or other internet content on the server, for example eLearning material. Hosting is the storing, serving and maintenance of files for website.
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) A programming language consisting of symbols or codes inserted in a file intended for display on a World Wide Web browser page. The markup tells the Web browser how to display a Web page's words and images for the user.
HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) Protocols or set of rules and standards used for transmitting requests and information between web server and web browser.
I
ILT Training in which an instructor delivers instructions in traditional classroom style. The term ILT is now also used in relation with online training.
Instructional Designer An Instructional Designer is the main figure in charge of the educational design of eLearning projects. This is the person that plans the entire project from projects content up to and including the presentation of the educational material to the student. OR An individual who, using systematic methodology and instructional theory, creates content for learning events.
Instructional Strategy Instructional plans or an activities employed by an instructor to teach the learner.
Instructor Guide A set of materials that provide direction, answers to tests, helpful hints, or any supplemental information.
Interactivity An program feature that requires the learner to do something is known to have interactivity features. Interactivity help to maintain learner's interest in an classroom/online course.
Internet Explorer (IE) The Web browser developed by Microsoft, commonly called just "IE", used for browsing websites on the Internet.
Intranet A private network owned by an organization offering similar functions of Internet. The only difference is that it is secure by a firewall, preventing any access from outsider.

Job Aid Often generated in paper or electronic format, job aids are used to relieve the learner from relying on memory to remember a skill (typically a procedure).

LCMS (Learning Content Management System) A set of software application managing the creation, storage, use & reuse of content. Content in LCMS is known as learning objects.
Learner Anyone who accesses an eLearning course to increase his or her skills and knowledge.
Learning Management System (LMS) Automated software for administration of training. LMS allows registration of learners, track courses, records learner's data and provides reports to senior management.
Learning Object Reusable chunks of content stored in a data repository such as LMS.
Learning portal Portal that offers learners/organization access to learning and training resources for various sources.
Lesson A unit of learning concerned with a specific skill. This term is sometimes interchanged with the terms section or module.
Localization Refers to the process of establishing information within a computer system.
Log-in To access a specific system or application, the user has to go through a procedure to gain access. The procedure to gain access is known as Log-in. Log-in information can be used to track information specific to a user.

Media Text, graphics, audio, video, or human element used to teach.
Module An integrated "theme" of content. Typically, one component of a course or a curriculum.
Multimedia The integration of different media, including text, graphics, audio, video and animation, in one program.

Needs Assessment The process which determines and addresses needs or gaps between the current conditions and desired conditions. Needs assessment process is often used for determining training needs.
Negative Reinforcement Encouraging a correct behavior by punishing any behaviors other than it.
O
Online Indicates that a computer is in a state of connectivity with another computer via a network.
Operating System A set of computer program that manages hardware resources of a computer system and facilitates operation of software applications.
P
Plug-in A small piece of software that adds features to a large piece of software to add various functionalities in a web browser.
Portal A Web site that offers a broad array of resources and services targeted towards a particular subject.
Positive Reinforcement Encouraging a behavior by rewarding that behavior after it is exhibited.
Practice Item Learning activity or a set of questions that validates learner's capability of reinforcement of instruction by giving immediate feedback.
Prerequisite A requirement that must be met before the learner is permitted to take on a certain course. For example, know how to work using spreadsheet software is a must for a course in business accounting class.
Pre-test and Post-test Test taken by the learner to measure existing knowledge or ability prior to any kind of instructional learning activity. Test given by the learner after any kind of instructional learning activity to measure knowledge gained.
Prototype Creation of working model based on original model to demonstrate crucial aspects of a program without creating a fully detailed program.
Q
QA Quality Assurance (QA) refers to planned and systematic techniques, processes and workflow used to ensure that company's products and services meet standards for excellence.
Quiz Evaluating the learner's skill or knowledge based on the expected skill or knowledge level required in a person for the same job, position, or assignment.
R
Real-time The actual time duration taken by computer to process information.
Request for Proposal (RFP) Official document or a written notification prepared by an organization offering to provide certain services and prices for those services.

SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) A collection of standards and specifications used for web based eLearning courses developed by various authoring tools using a single system.
Screen Capture Screen shot or an image dump taken by the computer to record the visible items displayed on the monitor.
Section Section is one topic of an eLearning course. Several sections form a chapter or lesson or a module.
Section 508 Section 508 states that websites should create their design, content and underlying technologies making it accessible to people with disabilities.
Self Assessment Process through which the learner interprets his/her personal level of knowledge and skills.
Server A computer that shares itself with many other, manages requests for data, transfer and other network services.
Simulation The process of enacting a situation/person to understand skills or behavior in a scenario.
Subject Matter Expert(SME) An individual having proficient knowledge and skills about a particular domain, topic or subject area.
Soft Skills Set of skills such as communication, behaviour, leadership, customer service, team building, etc., that influence how we interact with each other.
Source Code List of programming instructions translated into machine language that a computer understands.
Specifications A document containing a set of requirement explaining materials, standards, design, behaviour and other characteristics needed for creating a product.
Storyboard A series of images/scenes created to represent the end product such as eLearning course, movie, etc, to the user.
Streaming Media (streaming audio or video) Delivery of multimedia content like video, audio, etc, on screen, the instance it is being received from Internet
System Requirements Series of hardware and software resources like OS, memory, disk space, databases, etc required to run a computer application.
T
Teleconferencing Dual way electronic communication between two or more groups present in separate locations via audio, video, telephone, and/or computer systems.
Template A preset format of a document having the necessary structure and settings to create content quickly.
Text Written information material to be read and interpreted by the learner.
Tutorial Learning instructions explained in stages to teach the learner how to complete a particular action.

URL (uniform resource locator) Address of a webpage.
W
WBT (Web Based Training) Delivery of educational materials via a web browser over a Internet, intranet or an extranet.
Webinar Workshop, lecture or conference synchronized online with presenter and audience communicating via text chat, audio, online slide shows or an electronic white board.
X
XML (Extensible Markup Language) Coding language in a flexible text format for defining data elements and structures on a web page.
