THE SUMMARY
The Challenge: Empower the client’s multi-cultural global workforce to recognize hazards at the workplace to meet their ‘Zero Safety and Environmental Incidents’ goal.
CommLab India’s Solution: A highly interactive eLearning course with case studies and images that required learners to identify potential hazards.
The eLearning that could be accessed on any device was launched on the World Safety Day, April 28, 2022, and also translated into 25 languages to cater to the global audience.

THE RELATIONSHIP
CommLab India’s association with the client started way back in 2015 when we did a USD 100,000 worth pilot project (an eLearning curriculum with translations) for one of their subsidiary companies. Since then, we have been partnering with them on a regular basis, and have done around 300 eLearning projects and 280 translations till date.
The client first came to know about CommLab India through our efforts with inbound marketing. They chose to try us out as we are one of the very few eLearning vendors offering multiple services under one roof – classroom to eLearning conversion, Flash to HTML5 conversion, eLearning translations, and LMS services.
By opting for Commlab India, they could avoid the hassle of working with multiple, local eLearning vendors who neither had the ability to handle all their global training requirements nor the bandwidth to roll out large numbers of courses, within timelines, and at a pricing that works!
Added to that was our expertise in most of the popular eLearning authoring tools including Articulate, Lectora, Captivate, iSpring, and dominKnow.
It was Commlab India’s quality, responsiveness, speed of execution, and 24/7 availability that tilted the balance in our favor in the highly crowded eLearning space of corporate training.
We had started with one stakeholder in 2015. And now? We work with around 70 stakeholders from different divisions of the organization.
THE REQUIREMENT
‘Zero safety and environmental incidents’ was the client’s goal. And they wanted everyone of their employees to be able to identify any hazard at the workplace to help achieve that goal. To this end, they wanted us to develop and launch an eLearning course on Hazard Recognition on World Safety Day, April 28, 2022.
They were looking for a practical solution that would help provide consistent hands-on training to all employees while continuing to promote a culture of learning across the organization.
They also wanted the course to include real-life situations that would connect with the learners and bring about the required change in behavior, and for the course to be easily accessible on all mobile devices.
How does a global leader specializing in finding solutions to the world's greatest challenges in water, hygiene, and infection prevention overcome its own challenge of training its more than 47,000 strong globally disbursed and diverse workforce?
By opting for translations, of course! And the fact that Commlab could handle all their translation needs was a bonus.
After completion of the English version of the course, it was to be translated first into 18 languages. And then into 7 more languages after that.
THE SOLUTION
As one of the client requirements for the course was to include examples of real-life situations that would help learners identify hazards in their work settings, CommLab India designed the course to be highly interactive, providing situations within the course that required learners to identify hazards from displayed images.
The team that worked on the course included a dedicated project manager, senior instructional designer, and two courseware developers.
The course was meant for employees of all departments of the organization. To keep the content relevant for the varied type of audiences, different case studies were included, each relevant for a particular department. Learners were also free to go through other case studies that were of interest to them.
It was quite challenging working within a tight deadline and finalizing the content while aligning with the expectations of multiple SMEs and their different perspectives.
The fact that the course was meant for all the employees influenced the choice of images that would appeal to the multi-cultural global audience. It also meant the course needed to be easily accessible for all their ‘always on the move’ and ‘always on-the-job’ employees, and had to be totally responsive to enable learners to access it on their mobile devices whenever they had the time.
The authoring tool, dominKnow | ONE, was chosen after discussions with the client for course development, because of its highly responsive output, making the course easily accessible on all mobile devices.
dominKnow | ONE provides adaptive and responsive eLearning output for all devices from a single source. The tool also allows the entire team to work collaboratively to rapidly create engaging learning content. And that was very important as the course had to be launched on the World Safety Day. The DominKnow review tool also made it very easy for the 5 reviewers to review and provide feedback.
As for the challenge of training a globally disbursed and diverse workforce, translations were started in the first 18 languages as soon as the English master course was approved.
Despite the very tight deadline, CommLab India could launch the course as scheduled on the World Safety Day, April 28, 2022.
It took around 5 months to complete the entire project including translations into 25 languages.
THE RESULTS
Despite the very tight deadline, CommLab India could launch the course as scheduled on the World Safety Day, April 28, 2022.
